Yes, you'd get homesick sometimes but you’re in a new country! Keep reading to make the best out of your first year in Australia!
Here’s a list of things you should do in your first year in Melbourne:
1. Go to Melbourne Hosier Lane
Melbourne’s Hosier Lane is a very popular spot for tourists and international students due to its urban art and graffiti. Take the tram to the City Square station at Swanston Street to take amazing photos at this vibrant landmark of Melbourne!
2. Shop at Queen Victoria Market
This major landmark of Melbourne is an open air market, and the biggest one in the Southern Hemisphere! Whether it’s fresh oysters or clothing, there’s nothing you can’t find here. This historical market is popular with both locals and tourists for a reason, and is definitely worth checking out! Make sure you check their opening hours though, because it’s closed on Mondays and Wednesdays.
3. Grow a coffee addiction
Melbournians sure love their coffee! A lot of people fall in love with the coffee from Melbourne, and it’s no surprise; the culture is BIG! My personal favourite would be from Patricia Coffee Brewers in the CBD. Albeit being a strict standing-room only store, there’s always a line of people just to drink their $4 coffee.
4. Find out your new favourite brunch item
You know what’s even bigger than Melbourne’s coffee culture? It’s their brunch culture! A cross between breakfast and lunch, Melbournians line up for hours sometimes during brunch time to get their Eggs Benny and coffee! There are heaps of stores in the CBD with menu items with a combination of ingredients you can’t ever imagine! A personal pick would be the Eggs Benedict and Crab Meat Scramble from Humble Rays, and the Double Cheese Chilli Scrambled Eggs from White Mojo. Make sure you try the Matcha Latte while you’re at it!
5. Unleash your inner raver
One thing Melbourne is also famous for is its HUGE rave culture! There are multiple of music festivals every year, both indoors and outdoors. Ultra Australia houses the best DJs every year during March, at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse, and it’s something you do not want to miss if you like to party.
6. Go to White Night
If light shows are your thing, you should definitely go to White Night! Every year, light shows are made at landmarks in the city, at night time. Kaleidoscopic lights of different colours are projected on building walls, all accompanied by matching music and the chilly Melbourne wind. My words don’t really do this amazing event justice, so definitely go see for yourself!
7. Grind your way up
If going out is not your thing and you just want to focus on your studies, fret not, I got you! The State Library of Victoria is an ideal spot for students to study at with its endless number of seats. At close proximity is Starbucks, so you can go for coffee breaks! There is also the Baillieu Library at the University of Melbourne if you want to study in between classes. And although their students hate this, most Unimelb students also go to RMIT Library to study!
