Day in the life of a Bachelor of Science student at Unimelb

22 April 2020 by Ruth Tangbau

The weather is nice today on our University Campus. It is a typical busy day for me as a student who is taking Bachelor of Science with the hope that I will be able to join the Medicine School upon graduating.

I live at one of the residential colleges called Trinity College which is situated on the campus. Therefore, it only takes me around 5 to 15 minutes to get to my classes depending on where my classes are. I just finish lunch at College. We have around 200 undergraduate residents at College who are studying different degrees and who comes from different places around the country and around the world. I am one of the very few students who was not born and raised in Australia, residing at the College.

As all meals are provided at College, I almost always have meals at our College’s kitchen but sometimes I would go to the Union House where the food canteen is and try some dishes there. We have many cuisines including Japanese, Chinese, and Mexican. Today, I just have lunch at College and now I am on my way to my class which is a one-hour-long Biology lecture at 12 pm. I arrive at the lecture theatre and start taking notes.

After the lecture, I have a practical class for my Anatomy subject in a different building. So, I leave the lecture theatre for my practical class. For the practical, I will have the chance to revise the Anatomy lecture from yesterday and learn about the structure of the human body by firsthand experience. We will be dissecting the cadaver (the medical term for dead bodies) during the class with the supervision of our tutor.

On my way to my practical class, I walk pass South Lawn, which is a well-known spot for students on this kind sunny days. I see many students just lying on the grass there; some students in a group chatting away, some by themselves reading a book or using their laptops, and some just sunbathing and lying there.

The practical class starts at 1 pm. It is very informative and interactive. After the practical finish at 3 pm, I walk back to College and that is all classes I have to go for today. On my way back to the college, I walked past the gym and it reminds me of my Wu Shu, Chinese martial art, practice that I have tomorrow. I am a member of the Wu Shu club which is one of the many clubs that we have. We gather about 2 or 3 times a week to practice at the gym. All level students are welcomed to join this club.

I go into my room and sit down at my desk to do some homework. I firstly check my emails. I have received 2 emails back from the programs at the University which I registered to volunteer for. The first email is from the University’s Examination committee informing me that I will be trained to volunteer as a helper at the information stall on the exam day. The second one is from the Science Delivery program where I will be trained with other peers from Science faculty throughout the semester to go to schools around the Victoria state for a week at the end of the semester. We will be doing some science road shows and inspire young students to study science.

I am really glad I got into these programs. Now, it is time for me to go through the lessons that I learned today and prepare for my tutorials tomorrow!
